The first published of the four volumes in the Dalemark Quartet, this novel takes place after The Spellcoats and Drowned Ammet. All four novels interrelate, and all are clarified and at least partly resolved in the final volume, The Crown of Dalemark, which takes place partly in the timeframe of this novel and partly in Dalemark's present time. The "cwidder" mentioned in the title refers to a. A series of four books by British young adult fantasy author Diana Wynne Jones, best known for Howl's Moving Castle and Chrestomanci.       I think that the Dalemark Quartet (Cart and Cwidder, Drowned Ammet, The Spellcoats, and The Crown of Dalemark) by Diana Wynne Jones uses this idea of true names having power, to an extent. Echoing the first novel in the series, the novel is set in the time of Moril of Cart and Cwidder, and the present day Dalemark, in which the novel’s protagonist Mitt lives in. Wynne Jones combines the themes and even brings back some of the characters from the first novel in the writing of this novel.

Reading all of DWJ’s books in order of publication gives me an even greater appreciation for Drowned Ammet. All in all, not Diana’s best. Chronologically, Drowned Ammet occurs slightly before Cart and Cwidder with perhaps some overlap, which we can mark by the capture ammwt Konian and Kialan though they are not mentioned by namethe latter of which we know escapes and joins the .
